Impasto is both the name given to this group of brushes and also the name of the style used for many other brushes particularly in the Acrylics and Oils categories.
The Impasto effect is based on the traditional technique of painting with a very thick paint to create the impression of depth.
Painter re-creates the look of Impasto by using lighting effects to create a three-dimensional impression which is applied as the brush stroke is made.
This old shovel and another tool were hanging on the side of an old boat and I liked the contrast between the metal and the wood.
The Smeary Flat brush was chosen for the clone picture to emphasize the textures of the wood and metal. The brush sizes were between 20.0 and 50.0 and opacity 63%. The Clone Color option was ticked in the Colors palette.
One useful technique is the ability to turn the canvas around to make it easier to paint in a particular direction. In this case I wanted to paint downwards to go with the wood grain but that way the flat brush was being used on its short edge while I wanted to use the wide edge.
With a traditional canvas you can just turn it around, so you will not be surprised that Painter also allows you to do this. Click and hold the hand symbol in the Toolbox until the circular symbol appears. Click into the picture and drag until the canvas is in the position where it is most convenient to use and continue painting.
To revert to the normal upright position, simply double click in the picture.
You may also notice that the brush strokes appear different. That is to be expected, as you are now painting using the side of the brush and the brush strokes reflect that.
