The box to the right of the layer blend mode is the Layer Composite Depth control. The default here is Ignore. This set of options is active when using brushes which have Impasto strokes which show depth and a three-dimensional appearance. To try the effect now, use the Impasto> Thick Wet Round 20 brush with a brush size of about 40. Select a bright red color and paint into the picture, you will see how shadows have been added to the paint strokes which give them a three-dimensional appearance. The Layer Composite Depth option will have changed automatically to Add when you used this brush, change it to Ignore and see the brush strokes flatten.
