Oil Pastels

The brushes in the Oil Pastel category all use a very loose chunky style of applying paint but when the brush size is reduced down to a small size the detail can be brought back into the picture.

Oil Pastel brushes will show paper texture if the opacity and grain sliders are reduced considerably, compare the two examples of the Chunky Oil Pastel shown below, the default setting at the top and the reduced grain setting at the bottom.

Some brushes will use the Cloning Method and the Oil Pastel is shown in its default version below and also at the bottom of the examples using the Cloning Method. This does not show the grain at all but smears the original image.

A Variable Oil Pastel was used to make a clone of this photograph of a man with a splendid feather head dress.

The first step was to roughly block out the main shapes with brush size 30 and opacity 100%.

The same brush and one slightly larger but with reduced opacity was used to paint all over the picture, softening and merging the brush strokes together. In stage three a smaller brush brought out more detail and the opacity was increased to enhance the color and contrast.

Finally the original image was pasted back into the clone and using a layer mask some of the face was brought back to add more realism and detail.

The use of Layer Masks is explained in Chapter 7 which deals with all aspects of the Layers palette.
