Overlaying a texture from another picture

The next step is to take a handwriting sample and overlay it on the montage. This involves using the Apply Surface Textures command, which is explained in more detail in Chapter 6.

Step 17 Make a new layer at the top of the layer stack. Effects> Fill, and choose 50% gray in the Colors palette. You can select 50% gray by placing the cursor on the left edge of the inner triangle and moving it until the Value shows 50%. This will hide all the other layers with a gray color.

Step 18 File> Open> DVD> S tep-by-step files> '07 Elizabethan Handwriting' (Figure 7.30).

Step 19 Click back onto the montage document and go to File> Clone Source> '07 Elizabethan Handwriting'. Step 20 Effects>Surface Control>Apply Surface Texture. In the dialog box that appears change the Using box to Original Luminance and leave the other sliders on the default setting. Figure 7.31 shows the dialog box. Click OK and the handwriting will appear as embossed on the gray layer. Change the layer composite method to Overlay and the gray will disappear and the embossed letters will be superimposed on top of the montage. There are two other composite methods that work with a gray layer, Soft Light gives a softer effect and Hard Light emphasizes the texture. Figure 7.32 shows the layer before the layer composite method is changed.

Step 21 Add a layer mask to this layer and using the Medium Felt Tip pen again paint into the mask with a size 84.0 brush and 85% opacity Make sure the painting color is black and that you are painting on the mask and not the gray layer. Remove the embossed letters from most of the figure leaving it over the towel and background. If you remove too much, change the painting color to white and paint over again. Figure 7.33 shows the picture at this stage.
