Well, what are we to make of this brush category? It is very different and definitely not designed for accurate cloning.
The name of the brush category says it all, Pattern Pens are designed to make patterns out of images. Some of the brush variants can use the Cloning method but the result is much the same, an unusual sampling and mixing of the original picture.
The pens vary slightly. The Pattern Marker mutes the colors and gives a pastel finish while the Pattern Pen is strident and full of bold colors. The Soft Edge and Transparent Pens both have softer and slightly veiled looks.
Various brushes from the Pattern Pen category were used to make the abstract patterns on this page. Figure 3.78 shows the original photograph.
